The Complete Guide to Leasing a Used Tesla

By Alex · Guide reviewed . Live stock examples update separately.

Can you lease a used Tesla?

Yes. With Second Life Leasing, you can lease a pre-leased Tesla Model 3 or Tesla Model Y for yourself or your business in the UK. Our cars come directly from Lex Autolease, part of Lloyds Banking Group, after their first lease. Full maintenance and premium replacement tyres come with your lease.

Pick a Tesla from our current stock and choose your term and mileage. You pay an initial rental followed by monthly rentals, then hand the car back at the agreed end. Lex Autolease takes care of selling it on, so you can start thinking about your next car. Lease options are subject to application and approval.

Where do Second Life Leasing’s pre-leased Teslas come from?

Second Life Leasing’s pre-leased Teslas come directly from Lex Autolease, part of Lloyds Banking Group, after their first lease.

What does pre-leased mean?

A pre-leased Tesla has completed its first lease. Lex Autolease bought it from new and managed that lease, with agreed mileage, servicing and return standards. You’re choosing a car with a known leasing history, ready for its next driver.

Safety checks and preparation

Each Tesla goes through safety checks and preparation before delivery. We’ll point out any known minor cosmetic marks before you decide, so you know what to expect when the car arrives.

What are the current Tesla lease prices?

These are Second Life Leasing’s current pre-leased Teslas, with live lease prices. Swipe or use the arrows to have a look, then open a listing for more photographs, the specification and your lease options.

Which Tesla model and version should you choose?

Model 3: Tesla’s saloon for work and weekends

If you’re looking for a saloon for the commute and weekends away, start with the Model 3. There’s a separate rear boot, a front boot under the bonnet and more storage beneath the rear boot floor. You have somewhere to tuck smaller bags while keeping the main boot free for your luggage.

Model Y: hatchback access and flexible family space

If your week involves pushchairs, sports kit or bulky shopping, take a look at the Model Y. Its large rear hatch gives you more room to get things in and out. The second-row seat backs can fold flat for larger loads, though you may need to move the front seats forward to make room. There’s a front boot and storage beneath the rear boot floor too, handy for keeping smaller items out of the way.

The Tesla cabin: a central screen and your own settings

You’ll find navigation, music and many cabin controls on Tesla’s central touchscreen, leaving the dashboard uncluttered. If you share the car, saved driver profiles can recall the driver’s seat, steering-wheel and exterior-mirror positions. You can each keep the driving position that suits you.

Software updates are part of the Tesla experience

Tesla sends software updates over the air. Supported cars can receive feature improvements this way after leaving the factory, including pre-leased cars. What’s available depends on the car’s hardware, software version and purchased options.

RWD, Long Range or Performance?

Tesla’s version names help you narrow the search. RWD describes rear-wheel drive; AWD means all-wheel drive. Long Range identifies a range-focused version, so read it alongside the drive description in the listing.

  • RWD or an earlier standard-range version: worth a look for commuting, local trips and everyday driving.
  • Long Range: start here if longer journeys are a regular part of your week. Model 3 examples can have rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, so check the version on the listing.
  • Performance: take a look if quick acceleration and the sporting specification are what draw you to a Tesla. Check the car’s wheels, brakes and suspension equipment alongside its rental.

What does a Tesla lease through Second Life Leasing include?

Second Life Leasing’s pre-leased Tesla cars come with servicing, maintenance, MOT when required, premium replacement tyres, breakdown cover and road fund tax included in the lease. That’s fewer separate bills to keep track of while you enjoy the car.

Servicing, maintenance and premium replacement tyres

A full maintenance Tesla lease through Second Life Leasing includes servicing, maintenance, replacement tyres and MOT when required. Replacement tyres come from premium brands, with mobile fitting available where possible.

Breakdown cover and road fund tax

Second Life Leasing’s Tesla leases include full breakdown cover, with a replacement vehicle for up to 48 hours if needed and cover for driving abroad. Lex Autolease can help you confirm the arrangements before an overseas trip.

Second Life Leasing includes road fund tax for the duration of your Tesla lease.

Online support

As a Second Life Leasing Tesla customer, you can book servicing, ask for support and find your contract documents in the Lex Vehicle Leasing app.

What you budget for separately

Add insurance and charging to your rental budget and you have the main everyday costs covered. Your quote and agreement set out any fees and other charges, including excess mileage or damage where applicable.

What happens if your Tesla develops a fault?

If something goes wrong with your Tesla, contact Lex Autolease through its support process. Under Second Life Leasing’s full maintenance lease, Lex Autolease arranges repairs in line with your agreement.

Does the remaining Tesla manufacturer’s warranty affect your repair support?

Your repair support on a Second Life Leasing full maintenance Tesla lease comes through your agreement with Lex Autolease. It handles any manufacturer-warranty claim behind the scenes. You can ask Lex Autolease for help without having to work out how much Tesla warranty cover is left.

What battery-condition minimum does Second Life Leasing offer?

For electric vehicles supplied through Second Life Leasing, including our pre-leased Teslas, battery condition is guaranteed at a minimum of 85% at delivery. This battery-condition minimum does not promise a particular driving range.

Can you choose your Tesla lease term and mileage?

Yes. With Second Life Leasing, you can choose from the contract terms, annual mileages and payment profiles available for each Tesla. Open a car’s listing to see your options and put together a quote.

Count the journeys you make through the year, including the commute and holidays, when choosing your mileage. Pick a term you’re happy to keep the car for. Your agreement explains the terms and charges if you need to change or end it.

Personal or business leasing?

Second Life Leasing offers Personal Contract Hire if you’re leasing for yourself and Business Contract Hire for business use. The prices in this guide are personal rentals including VAT. If you’re choosing a company car, ask us for a business quote.

Why choose a pre-leased Tesla?

Drive the Tesla you want, with maintenance and support included through Second Life Leasing. When the agreed term ends, hand it back and choose what you’d like to drive next, without having to sell the car or negotiate a part-exchange.

Is leasing a used Tesla cheaper than leasing new?

A pre-leased Tesla has already been through its initial depreciation. You’re leasing it at its current value rather than its new price, which can mean lower rentals than leasing new.

Why give an electric car a second life?

A pre-leased Tesla keeps an existing electric car and its battery in use for another driver. You get to enjoy electric driving in a car that’s been prepared for its next lease.

Your Tesla produces no tailpipe emissions while you drive. UK government guidance also explains that a typical electric car has lower lifetime greenhouse-gas emissions than an equivalent petrol car, including battery production and disposal. Manufacturing and the electricity used for charging remain part of its overall footprint.

Who takes the resale-value risk?

On a Tesla lease through Second Life Leasing, Lex Autolease owns the car and handles its eventual resale. You return it at the scheduled end under the agreed mileage and condition terms, leaving Lex Autolease to find a buyer and manage its sale value.

How do you lease a Tesla through Second Life Leasing?

Once you’ve found a Tesla you like in Second Life Leasing’s stock, we’ll help you work out the terms, put your application together and arrange delivery.

  1. Choose your car. Shortlist a Tesla from current stock using its specification, photographs and mileage.
  2. Request your lease quote. Choose your contract term, allow enough annual mileage for commuting and holidays, and agree a payment profile that suits your budget.
  3. Check insurance and timing. Get an insurance quote using that car’s details and check the likely delivery date before reserving.
  4. Complete the application. Review your quote, the car’s condition information and agreement, then complete the required application and paperwork.
  5. Arrange delivery. Agree the handover arrangements once approval, paperwork and vehicle preparation are complete.

Have a Tesla in mind, or need a hand choosing? Tell us what you’re looking for and we’ll help you find one that suits you. If this is your first lease, our guide to how used car leasing works takes you through the process.
