The Complete Guide to Leasing a Used Volvo

Cream metallic Volvo XC40 Recharge with a black roof in a pale grey studio, viewed from the front three-quarter angle

By Alex · Guide reviewed . Live stock examples update separately.

Can you lease a used Volvo?

Yes. Second Life Leasing offers pre-leased Volvo cars for personal and business leasing in the UK, with full maintenance and premium replacement tyres included. Browse Volvo stock to compare compact electric SUVs with larger XC60 and XC90 hybrid choices.

You choose a specific car with its own photographs, specification and recorded mileage. Pay an initial rental followed by monthly rentals, then return the car at the agreed end. Applications are subject to approval.

Where does my Volvo come from?

Second Life Leasing’s Volvo cars come directly from Lex Autolease, part of Lloyds Banking Group, after their first lease. Lex continues to own the car and offers it for another lease. We help you choose and arrange it; your hire agreement is with Lex Autolease.

A first lease with a known history

Lex bought the car from new and managed its first lease, with agreed mileage, servicing and return standards. That gives your next Volvo a known leasing history. The individual listing and vehicle information tell you about the particular car you are considering.

Safety checks and preparation

Each car goes through safety checks and preparation for its next driver. It is still a used car, and we will highlight known minor cosmetic imperfections before you decide, so you can picture what will arrive.

What are the current Volvo lease prices?

The car you choose, contract term, annual mileage and payment profile all affect the rental. Compare the initial payment as well as the monthly figure when deciding what fits your budget.

Which Volvo model and version should you choose?

XC40: three powertrain types under a familiar shape

The XC40 is a useful starting point for a compact SUV, but read the full powertrain description. B3 and B4 are mild hybrids: they use an engine and do not plug in. T4 Recharge and T5 Recharge are petrol-electric plug-in hybrids. The XC40 Recharge Pure Electric is a battery-electric car with no petrol engine.

Volvo’s XC40 hybrid announcement explains the separate mild-hybrid and plug-in choices. “Recharge” alone is therefore not enough when comparing used cars. If you can plug in routinely, consider the electric or plug-in versions; if charging will not fit your week, compare the mild hybrid on its own terms.

Electric XC40 and EX40: check the model year and drive layout

The fully electric XC40 Recharge became the EX40 for the 2025 model year. That naming change is separate from an earlier technical update: for the 2024 model year, Single Motor electric XC40s changed from front-wheel drive to rear-wheel drive. Volvo’s January 2023 announcement describes the revised motors and batteries.

Twin Motor identifies all-wheel drive. Compare an early Single Motor, a later Single Motor and a Twin Motor as different versions, even if their trim names match. The EX40 name confirms the electric branch of the family; it does not mean every earlier XC40 was electric or had the same charging capability.

C40 and EC40: the sloping-roof electric alternative

The C40 Recharge is fully electric and has a lower, sloping rear roofline compared with the upright XC40. It was renamed EC40 for the 2025 model year. The Single Motor front-to-rear-drive change also matters when comparing earlier and later C40s.

Choose this body if its shape appeals, then try rear headroom and the luggage area with the items you carry. A sloping roof can affect tall loads differently from an upright tailgate. Single Motor, Extended Range and Twin Motor descriptions should be read separately from Plus, Ultimate or a Black Edition equipment treatment.

EX30: the smaller electric SUV

The EX30 is the compact electric choice if the XC40-sized cars are more vehicle than you need. The original UK range separates Single Motor Extended Range from Twin Motor Performance. Both use the larger 69kWh battery family, but the Twin Motor adds a second motor and all-wheel drive.

For everyday use, decide whether the extra performance is useful before choosing it over the Extended Range. Try the rear seats and boot with your normal passengers and luggage: a smaller exterior is helpful for parking, but it also changes the amount of room you have to work with.

XC60 T6 and T8: a larger SUV with plug-in flexibility

The XC60 T6 and T8 Recharge plug-in hybrids combine petrol power with a battery you can recharge. They are worth comparing if you want a larger SUV and can make use of electric driving on suitable local journeys. T8 is the higher-output choice, but fitted seats, cameras and the available rental may matter more in daily use.

Volvo’s XC60 powertrain guide separates plug-in hybrids from mild hybrids. Batteries and charging specifications changed during production, so compare the exact T6 or T8 version rather than assigning a current car’s electric range to an earlier one. Regular plugging in is what makes the electric side useful.

XC90: start with the seats you need

The XC90 is the larger family choice when extra seating is the reason for changing cars. Volvo’s XC90 range information distinguishes its mild-hybrid and petrol-electric plug-in powertrains. A B5 mild hybrid does not charge from a socket; a T8 plug-in hybrid does.

Confirm the individual seating layout, try access to the rearmost seats and look at luggage space with every seat you need in use. A large outside body does not leave the same boot space in every seating configuration. Check the parking footprint too, then choose the engine and charging arrangement that fit your normal year.

Choose the equipment you will use

Core, Plus, Ultimate and Ultra are equipment grades; Bright and Dark describe different exterior treatments. Compare the actual seats, parking cameras, winter equipment and infotainment generation instead of expecting every Ultimate or Ultra to have the same features. If a connected feature matters to you, confirm that it works on the particular car and whether an ongoing subscription is needed.

Equipment and charging specifications can change during production. Confirm the manufacturer’s specification, fitted options, cables and any connected-service subscriptions for the actual car before ordering; registration year and trim name alone do not tell the whole story.

What comes with my Volvo lease?

Second Life Leasing’s full maintenance package brings the routine upkeep into your lease, helping you plan for more than the rental alone.

Servicing, maintenance and premium replacement tyres

Servicing, maintenance, replacement tyres and MOT when required are included. Replacement tyres are premium brands, with mobile fitting where possible. Collection and return for servicing and maintenance are included, subject to limitations.

Breakdown cover and road fund tax

Breakdown cover includes a replacement vehicle for up to 48 hours if needed, plus cover for driving abroad. Check the overseas arrangements with Lex before travelling. Road fund tax is included for the duration of your lease.

Online support

The Lex Vehicle Leasing app gives you a way to book servicing, request support and find your contract documents. Use the lease company’s support route for your maintained agreement.

What do I pay for separately?

Allow for insurance and fuel or charging. Your quote and agreement also explain applicable fees and contract charges, including excess mileage and damage charges. Included maintenance helps with budgeting without making every motoring cost fixed.

What happens if my Volvo develops a fault?

Contact Lex Autolease through its support process. Under Second Life Leasing’s full maintenance offering, Lex arranges covered repairs in line with your agreement, so you have a clear route to getting help.

Does the manufacturer’s warranty matter?

Where a manufacturer’s warranty applies, Lex handles the claim behind the scenes. Your repair support follows the maintained lease agreement; you do not need to work out the remaining manufacturer’s warranty before reporting a problem.

What about an electric Volvo’s battery?

Our pre-leased battery-electric Volvo cars come with a guaranteed minimum battery condition of 85% at delivery. That is a delivery baseline, rather than a guarantee throughout the lease or a promise of a particular driving range.

Can I choose the term and mileage?

Yes. Each car’s listing shows its available contract terms, annual mileage allowances and payment profiles. Choose mileage around your normal year, including commuting, business journeys and holidays.

The payment profile determines how much you pay initially and in subsequent rentals. Choose a term you are comfortable committing to, and review the agreement’s provisions and charges for changing or ending it early.

Personal or business leasing?

You can apply for Personal Contract Hire in your own name or Business Contract Hire for your business. The live examples in this guide are personal rentals including VAT, even if you are browsing in Business mode. Select Business to explore business prices on the stock pages, or ask us for the appropriate quote.

Why choose a pre-leased Volvo?

More of the car you want within your budget

Volvo’s range lets you choose passenger space first, then decide between electric driving, a plug-in hybrid or a mild hybrid. A pre-leased Volvo has already been through its initial depreciation. Leasing it at its used value can mean a lower rental than leasing new, with the individual quote showing what that means for your chosen car. You can put the rental alongside your other regular costs and decide whether the whole package works for you.

Giving an electric Volvo another lease of life

Choosing a pre-leased battery-electric Volvo keeps an existing car and its battery in use. Battery-electric Volvo cars produce no tailpipe emissions while driving. Manufacturing and charging electricity still contribute to their overall footprint.

UK government guidance explains that a typical electric car has lower lifetime greenhouse-gas emissions than an equivalent petrol car, including battery production and disposal. That is general EV evidence, rather than a measured saving for an individual used Volvo.

A scheduled return without finding a buyer

At the agreed end, return the Volvo subject to the mileage and condition terms. Lex owns and resells it and takes the resale-value risk. You can choose your next car without arranging a private sale or negotiating a part-exchange.

How do I arrange my Volvo lease?

  1. Tell us which Volvo interests you. We will help you choose from the available cars and confirm the details that matter to you.
  2. Review your quote. We will place a temporary reservation while you look through the figures.
  3. Complete the paperwork online. We will guide you through the credit application and your agreement with Lex Autolease.
  4. Take delivery. Once your application is approved and the car is ready, we will arrange included mainland UK delivery to your door.
